You Got Me What!?

Wednesday, December 28, 2011 -
Fondue. Sure, it may make people think of the 1970's or of shag carpet. It reminds me of friends of delicious cheese and chocolate. We end up dining at The Melting Pot at least a few times a year, particularly around the holidays. I had a love affair with the restaurant a while back. I still enjoy it, but not as much as I used to. But don't get me wrong, still delicious and I look forward to it every time Do You Fondue? I do! rolls around on the advent calendar. Day 20, and we ended a delicious dinner at the MP.

Day 21: Holiday Tree was a night where we would make some dinner together and enjoy under our Christmas tree lights. Unfortunately, I forgot I had a meeting. So, changes happen as mentioned before. Hubs made a great dinner and I was able to enjoy it when I got home.

Holiday gifts were all over the month this year. But our big gifts were given on day 22: Merry Christmas hubby! As we exchanged gifts, hubs received his remote control helicopter that he had been wanting, while I received my beautiful NEW CAMERA! EEK! Isn't it gorgeous?! This beauty is a Canon t3i, everything I wanted in a DSLR. I've been asking for one for quite sometime, and he went all out. Not only did he purchase a camera, but I also received three lenses and a bunch of other great accessories. And of course, every new camera needs a bag, and I got this beauty from Epiphanie. Love. I'm so in love with my holiday gifts - thanks hubby!!!

Not much can top the new camera love, but day 23: I'll Be Home for Christmas is a close one. We drove home to Green Bay that evening with a book on cd and the pups in the back seat. They love nap time.

In preparation for the Christmas Day Packer vs. Bears game, hubs received his final gift. Day 24: A Cold Christmas Eve gave hubs a new winter Packer hat for the game - which the Packers won! It was a great game, and we had a wonderful time! GO PACK GO!

Hope everyone (who was celebrating) had a great Christmas Eve!

Super Bowl Champs - The Green Bay Packers!!

I wore green and gold all weekend in anticipation.  We decorated the house with balloons, green and yellow crepe paper and all of our beads, cowbells and pom poms from our previous celebrations.  Our friends arrived with food in hand (think wings, meatball sliders, guac, Big Boy burger bites, dips, cheese, sausage, etc.!) to compliment our build your own nacho bar, cheddar and sausage chowder, brats, beer dip and pretzels.

We drank High Life.  And now, we are living it.

Last night was one of those nights where I wish I could have been in my home city...what an amazing atmosphere.  In 1996, when this previous happened (yes, we beat the New England Patriots. My dear Mass friends, I remember this well...I was 14) the excitement in the city was overwhelming. Pride was what everyone felt when the Lombardi trophy returned to Title Town.  I'm sure it is the same today, and will be for quite sometime.

A BIG congratulations to my boys, the Green Bay Packers, for being this year's Super Bowl Champions!  Here are some photos from Green Bay - wish I could have been there!

And yes, I'm still wearing green today...

Respectfully on Cloud 9

The Green Bay Packers are going to the Super Bowl!  Whether you are a fan or not, hear me out.

Born and raised in Green Bay, I have always loved my Pack.  I don't fully remember my first game because I am fortunate to have season tickets in my family name.  Yes, the classic "they were my grandfather's and now my dad and uncle each have a set" type of situation.  Would I love to have those tickets someday?  Why yes, yes I would (hint mom and dad - I know you read this!)  I am passionate about my team.

When I was in college at UMass-Amherst, I wore my cheesehead proudly.  And now here in Indy, I still have it on display with my signed helmet from Donald Driver.  Love. The. Packers.  It is tough not being in Titletown when it comes to the love, but I do my best to support the team.

But why was this game a big deal?  Not only because it was on Championship Sunday, but because it was the Bears.

The two teams haven't played each other in a championship game since 1941.  It is a rivalry that I respect.  I have many friends who are Bears fans, and I adore them all the same.  I respect them because of their history, which is similar to the Packers.  There is not a team who I would have wanted to play more in that championship game, because I love the intense situation it puts us in.  My nerves were all over the place as both teams had more than the Super Bowl to play for (though yes, that is the big one.)

But, I still love to hate them.  I mean, it is a rivalry after all.  I did raise my glass at the end of the game in a salute because it was a battle.  I am extremely happy that the Packers came out victorious, but I will not be the one who gloats to the Bears fans.  If roles were reversed, I would hope they would do the same for me.  Respectable fans are the best fans.

Here's to February 6 and the great road that we took to get there.  No matter the outcome, I'll wear my cheesehead proudly and raise my glass of cold beer (let us hope it is draft PBR) in freezing temperatures to support my team.  Always.

Who are you rooting for in the Super Bowl, and why?

A Stately Visit

Wednesday, January 19, 2011 -
Still glowing from the Green Bay Packer win on Saturday, hubs and I made our way to the Indiana State Museum the following day.  We were to visit the museum back in December for his 25 Days of Christmas, but plans change.  So on the final day of the Titanic exhibit, we made our way downtown for the early afternoon.  Though it had been quite a while (December 2009) since we had been to the museum, we decided to only see two exhibits: Titanic and Odd Indiana.

Titanic had been at the museum for a while, but we weren't the only ones who waited until the last day to see the exhibit.  We arrived early, because we read we had to be at the exhibit 15 minutes prior and we also wanted to see the Odd Indiana exhibit.  Our Titanic tickets (which were $18 a piece) gave us admission to all the exhibits and I had wanted to see Odd Indiana, this was the perfect time do so.  We arrived around 11:30 and began our tour.

Odd Indiana was just that - odd - but also, disappointing.  I expected so much more from this exhibit and I need to chalk that up to the marketing department.  They had me all excited to see some very odd things - whoever did the marketing deserves a raise.  It really looked so interesting, so when we saw some basic things, I couldn't help but to be a little disappointed.

Now, there were some great items - like the electrifying hair contraption or all of the hair art.  But some of it wasn't odd at all, leaving me questioning why it was on display.  For instance, a paper Barbie plate that was used during the opening of the Barbie exhibit in 1983.  It seemed as though they had all of these random items in their archives and thought, "how can we make an exhibit out of this?"  Some had good background stories, but overall, we walked out of the room with disappointment.

For Titanic, we were instructed to return to the exhibit 15 minutes prior to our ticket time.  Unfortunately, the timed tickets were utterly useless.  Though our ticket said 12:30 and we arrived at 12:15, we didn't get into the exhibit until 1:00.  After the 45 minute wait, we were presented with our "identities," which is probably what I was most excited for.  Right away, I knew that I "survived" because their was a quote about how my character, an Irish immigrant who was visiting her cousins in Missouri, had given a homeless man some coins and he had said to her, "there will be a tragedy, but you will survive."  Kind of a given that I survived huh?

The first room was the history of the build with a few artifacts here and there. My favorite piece in the room were the horns from the ship, as it was Tim's.  The second room showed cabins and the ship in general - there was a replica of how first class looked (both Tim and I had characters from the third class,) dishes, playing cards and lots of other items.  Though interesting, I was still looking for more information regarding the tragedy itself.  It is amazing to see all the detail that went into the boat, as well as compare how things have changed today with cruise ships (um, hello Disney's new ship, Dream?!  So jealous...)

As we began to make our way into the final room, we were stopped and told we couldn't proceed due to someone have a seizure.  Medical emergency, understandable, so we stood aside and waited.  However, the museum continued to allow people into the room which we were in, thus making it more crowded.  Not the best idea, but we continued to wait it out.  Another 45 minutes later, we were allowed into the final room through a hallway which featured another cabin replica.  Tim's character, a family man, was actually in a photograph as it was the kind of room he and his family would have had.  I thought that was fun - once again, the character part really making the exhibit for me at this point.

The final room was the best setup.  It had pieces that were presented just like they were found on the ocean floor, there was a large piece of ice you were invited to touch to showcase how cold it was, and a model of the front portion of the ship.  Someone was available to answer questions, videos were shown and signs explained how the ship was excavated.  This room was the most interesting and really allowed me to appreciate all that was done to preserve our history of the event.  I do wish the other rooms were similar in design as it was setup better for flow and the overall atmosphere matched the mood of how I felt looking at the items.

Unfortunately (but understandably), we weren't allowed to take photos within the exhibit.  But, there are some photos and other recaps over at the Doing Indy blog, so if you missed out you may get a recap over there.  Despite our delays and lack of enthusiasm from the Odd Indiana exhibit, we still left content due to the final room of the Titanic exhibit.  Though we all know the story of the ship, reading and seeing brought a whole new appreciation to those who make the study of this tragedy their life experience through finding and uncovering the history.

Have you been somewhere recently where the marketing was fantastic, only to disappoint you in the end?

I'll Be Home for Christmas...

Monday, December 27, 2010 -
Hubs and I made our trek to Green Bay, Wisconsin to see family for Christmas.  It was great to go on social media hiatus for a bit (though I did miss all of you) and spend every minute with family.  It was a "long" weekend, but it went by very quickly as the two full days were both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, thus we spent every minute with our families.  But it was fantastic to see everyone, and I loved every minute of it.

We spent Christmas Eve with my family and ate a lot of great food, including prime rib, roasted Brussels sprouts and corn, creamy bleu potatoes and other delicious sides.  And of course, we drank some merry concoctions of peppermint martini's (peppermint schnapps, whipped vodka and Bailey's) as well as Creamsicle martini's (whipped vodka with orange juice) and of course, Manhattan's, Old Fashion's and wine.

Christmas Day was spent with Tim's family.  We were able to spend sometime with our darling nephews, including our two week old nephew who we met for the first time, nieces, and both Tim's immediate family and their significant others and his extended family of aunts and uncles.  Socializing over lunch of prime rib, roasted chicken, baked ham, mashed potatoes, dressing, dumplings and little nibbles of candies and apps, we had a great time (and of course, watched the Disney parade!) watching all the children open their presents.  The smiles are priceless!

We left early on Sunday to dodge holiday traffic in Chicago and ended up making it back to Indy in great time.  We even managed to catch the Packer game over our "we just visited Wisconsin" dinner (it seems as though every evening we get back from Wisconsin, we ended up having a dinner of cheese, beef sticks and beer - I am not complaining, just sayin').  It was a great long weekend, but I'm excited to be back home and have the week off.  Unfortunately, hubs does have to work four days this week, but in that time span, I plan on cooking and organizing to my hearts content.  And of course, watching Netflix.

How was your holiday?

Hubby is a Poutine Believer

Thursday, October 14, 2010 -
While in Vancouver, hubs and I came to the realization that we may miss the Monday Night Football game featuring our beloved Packers and our nemesis, da Bears.

Originally from Green Bay, this would make us sad.

But alas, we found a friendly bar, Ceili's Irish Pub, full of football fans (a Colts fans, an obnoxious Bears fan, and another Packers fan...plus others that didn't display loyalty in yelling or t-shirts) and were happy.

We drank some locally brewed Canadian beer (no, Molson was in that mix) and ordered a variety of items to share throughout the evening, including this....poutine.
I learned my potato loving husband had never had poutine.

My heart broke...a little...

A Canadian staple, poutine is an order of fries topped with cheese curds (and the Wisconsin girl in me cheers!) and brown gravy.  Hubs had a "why have I never thought of putting gravy on fries before?" moment before diving into the dish.  It makes sense, I mean we put gravy on mashed potatoes right?  This isn't a crazy dish - just a good one. The fries were seasoned well, the cheese curds were tangy and melted plus the gravy was creamy and piping hot.  Salty all over - perfect football food.

Thank you Ceili's for making hubs a believer.

I also had a cup of their pumpkin soup and it was delish.  No photo was taken - I'm assuming this was because I couldn't help but eat it immediately...it is pumpkin after all - but it was smooth in texture with a swirl of cream on top.  The waitress (who was phenomenal) even dropped off some brown sugar packets because she thought it made the soup better - she was right.  The soup was good, but the sugar bumped up the sweetness factor making it savory and sweet.  Nom.

We also had these...
Since nachos are one of my favorite foods of all time (really, I could be so full but still find room to eat more,) it shouldn't be a surprise that we had to order them.  They were great - crispy chips with chicken, jalapenos, scallions, tomatoes and black olives served with salsa and sour cream.  I noshed my way through despite being full.

Another fun thing about Ceili's - Monday Night Football trivia and Essay contest.  Yup, a bar who encourages you to write after drinking pints.  And I wrote...I wrote about my comparison of B.Favre to an ex-boyfriend.  It's a long story, but let's just say that Ceili's enjoyed it and bought me a round.  Yeats' quote "There are no strangers here, only friends that have not met yet," is the establishments quote.  It is the best quote for this restaurant as we never felt like a tourist.  The service was great and everyone was incredibly friendly - cheers for a great evening!
