Movember - A Gala for the 'Stache

Tuesday, December 7, 2010 -
Thank you to all of my friends and family who donated to Tim's Movember fundraising!  Though itchy, he grew his 'mo through November in support of raising awareness for men's health.  We celebrated the 'stache with friends at the Indy Movember Gala.  It was an evening of great costumes (by us and a few others), great local craft beer at Tomlinson Tap in the City Market, and a few nibbles here and there.  Here is a photo recap (thank you to my extremely talented photographer friend, RMatthea, for allowing me to post her photos - she is utterly fantastic!  The only one that is mine is the group photo - you can see how talented she is!)

I'm also happy to report that though the 'stache was grown for a cause, it is no longer.  I am happy to have my hub's freshly shaven face back!  A big thank you to all the volunteers who put on this gala - a great cause that was supported by great people.  We enjoyed the evening and were happy to be a part!

Cheers to next year!

Weekend Advent Recap

Monday, December 6, 2010 -
Over the weekend (including Friday,) hubs celebrated day 3, 4 and 5 of his advent calendar.  Here is a recap of his holiday cheer:

Day 3 - Holiday Fondue
Friday meant an evening at the delicious Melting Pot on the northside.  In the past, hubs and I would frequent often with our two dear friends, the M's, but haven't been in quite a while.  The last time we were there was for my birthday - it was time for some fondue!

This big night out had a French theme, and we took advantage of all the featured courses:
  • Cheese Fondue - consisting of Brie, Fontina, Gruyere and Raclette, the cheese was the best dish.  There was this amazing white-truffle cream that contained Nueske's bacon (go Wisco!) and fresh chives.  The cheese was creamy, but had a hint of the Brie's rind to it once in a while.  However, it was smooth and delicious.
  • Salad - I tried the featured Salade Nicoise and was disappointed with it.  It had many toppings, including a hard-boiled egg, Nicoise olives, tomatoes and beets - but I just wasn't a fan of all the flavors coming together with the vinaigrette. Hubs did comment that his California salad was improving with each visit, slowly getting back to it's original taste as it had been on the decline.
  • Main Course - Fondue Fusion, but this time, we didn't substitute the Goat Cheese & Ratatouille ravioli for something different.  Why?  Because goat cheese was involved!  Though they were the best ravioli we've received at MP, I would encourage you to still swap it out for something else.  The lobster was the usual, as was the Filet Mignon.  The peppercorn crusted NY strip was as expected, very peppery, and the Duck a l'Orange had a bold citrus taste.  The roasted garlic shrimp were sweeter and the Chicken Provencal was fantastic with the sweet & sour sauce, a sauce I normally do not enjoy.
  • Chocolate Course - I was very pleased with the caramelized sugar of the White Chocolate Creme Brulee.  Once you broke through it, the unexpected sweet crunch worked very well with all the dessert dippers.  It really was quite good - a pleasant surprise as we do not normally order white chocolate.

In addition, MP is having a great promotion right now to benefit St. Jude's Children Hospital.  We ended up donating some money and received $20 coupons plus a free dessert fondue that evening.  I encourage you to give back while you enjoy some great food if possible!

Day 4, A Change of Plans
The theme was originally a "Museum Date," but because it was snowing, plans changed.  As I mentioned, hubs can veto a plan if he likes, and the Ahrens' tradition of a the first snowfall breakfast would definitely trump an Advent plan.  Whenever the first overnight snow happens, hubs LOVES to get into the car and drive first thing in the morning.  This year, we hit up Bub's for some snowy breakfast.  I'm a fan of Bub's breakfast, so no complaints here!

Breaking my number one rule of eating out (which is ordering the same thing,) we both ordered a seafood version of Eggs Benedict.  Looking heavy upon receipt (I thought it was white gravy!,) I was pleasantly surprised for a light crab sauce.  A few chunks of some delicious crab (hubs thought it tasted like a seafood sauce, not crab specific) gave great flavor to the dish.  The eggs were over soft rather than poached - I would have preferred the later but was still happy to see egg yolks pour over the toasted English muffin.  Great first snow breakfast!

We spent the remainder of the day running a few errands and prepping for the Movember Gala - which I'll post photos from soon.

Day 5, Cookies
Baking cookies is a tradition!  And rather than waking hubs up early to bake, he ended up nibbling on the goods throughout the afternoon while watching football with the pup.

This year, I ended up baking some Caramel Blondies and Red Velvet Cookies.  I had found the Red Velvet cookie recipe via twitter by following Taste of Home and I was really anxious to try them. Though good, the winner of the cookie battle were the Blondies.  The caramel taste was sweet with the buttery brownie - absolutely delicious both still warm or at room temp.  If you want that recipe, just let me know!  Nom.

How was your weekend?  Were you able to celebrate the holidays?

Day 2 - Christmas Decor

Friday, December 3, 2010 -
Scheduling the 25 Days of Christmas for hubs can sometimes be a challenge.  Why?  Several reasons:
  • Hubs (or myself) may not "feel" like doing the activity that specific day
  • Weather may not always cooperate
  • Spontaneous plans can interrupt the schedule
This is expected, but as a planner, I always have a back-up plan.  There is always room for flexibility, after all, they are planned just so we have fun (or get things accomplished while feeling holiday cheer!)  On day two, it happened.  The theme of the day was "Holiday Decor," specifically aimed at the Ahrens' tradition of creating our own wreath to hang on the door.  Our second holiday together, hubs surprised me by purchasing all of this greenery which we then molded into a fantastic wreath.  We've done it every year since, but last night, by the time we would have bought the greenery, had dinner and prepped everything, it would have been a little later than we would have liked.  So instead, we decorated the tree (which we were going to be doing anyway, we just focused our energy a little bit more) and decided to do the wreath another day.

I'm the kind of person who would love to have themed trees in every room (yes, I like to theme rooms for events as we recall.)  A Disney tree here, a red & green tree there - the possibilities are really endless.  Right now, I'm thankful to have not one, but two trees.  We started this 'one real tree, one artificial tree' concept when we moved to Carmel a few years ago.

On the main floor, we have the 'real' tree full representing our relationship and adventures throughout the years.  It includes ornaments from our travels (we always purchase a cook book and/or ornament when we travel) as well as ornaments that we give to each other for special occasions (which is mostly the holidays.)  Inspired by Fun & Fearless, I wanted to show you a few of my favorites:

Quick explanations: The Mickey/Minnie ears represent our wedding as we were introduced wearing our own hats, the Mickey ornaments were purchased during our Disney vacations (the Santa bearing Mouse ears was from our engagement trip and the other is from this past summer) and the Canadian bear is from the Granville Market in Vancouver during our anniversary vacation.  And of course hub's favorite:

Downstairs, the artificial tree has been switched up this year.  In the past, it was known as the 'blue tree.' Since I bought the Disney topper during the girls' vacation at WDW this past summer, I've shifted our red and green bow downstairs.  Thus, all those blue ornaments wouldn't really fit the scheme, so I expanded a bit.

Instead, ornaments I received growing up now hang.  Every Christmas my mother would give me an ornament, here are few of my favorites:

The house is bright with lights as the holiday cheer is surrounding us (especially with this chilly weather in the air.)  A busy weekend is ahead including today's activity for Day 3, tomorrow's activity and the End of Movember Gala (there is still time to donate!), and I'm off to Purdue on Sunday for a Sorority function before our Day 5 activity.  Busy busy!

Any big weekend plans?  How is your holiday decor coming along - are you in the holiday spirit?

Movember Awareness: Have You Hugged a Mo Today?

Monday, November 15, 2010 -
Hubs is growing a 'stache.

He doesn't normally have facial hair, so this handlebar look is very odd for me.  People keep telling me I'll "get used to it," but I'm not quite sure about that.  This is what I'm used to, clean shaven hubs.

However, I'm pretty happy (and supportive) of hubs and his hair growth.

Yes, that doesn't make sense - I know that.  But let me explain why I'm happy for hubs and this effort.

It is all for Movember.

For those who do not know what Movember is, it is the combination of the slang word, Mo, for moustache and November.  Thus, Movember.  It is the "ribbon" for men to show their support in raising awareness for cancer's that affect men.  Some people run or walk to raise awareness, but these men, they grow facial hair.  To raise awareness of prostate cancer, hubs has decided to reach out to the public with his handlebar mo'.  He, RS, and JN are joining forces for team Frida Mo.

Here he is after the first week and half:

Yes, the 'stache is here.  And yes, I'm getting "used" to it.

If you are able, please support hubs in this fund raising efforts.  It would really mean a lot as his family has been personally affected by prostate cancer - he is looking to help educate people.  He is working to raise at minimum $200 and would love your support.  Shout out's to our friends who have already donated - thank you Daily Sweatpants and Fun & Fearless for your support!

Expect 'stache updates as well - hubs is committed, handlebars and all!
