From Me to You

Tuesday, February 14, 2012 -
Valentine's Day is about love of all kinds. From my husband, family and friends, I wish you all lots of love on the day filled with paper and candy hearts, red and pink clothing, and flowers galore.

I'm avoiding these cookies I made like the black plague. Something about putting maple syrup in sugar cookies makes them that much more addictive....I just hope I can avoid them and not spoil my dinner.

Celebrating Valentine's Day tonight? Being the food lover that I am, hubs and I are heading out to dinner, trying something new. Make sure you check out City Nom Noms for a recap in the upcoming week!

Traditions: A Wreath, Gingerbread & Socks

Tuesday, December 13, 2011 -
Traditions. Everyone has them. This past weekend, hubs and I celebrated three different traditions. But this time around, there was something interesting about these traditions.  Let me begins with socks.

Tradition 1 - Socks. Hubs steals my socks. My white gym socks that is. To the point that I have no more. Let's ignore the fact that I didn't notice until I started to visit the gym again. Yes, I went on hiatus. A very long hiatus. But that isn't the point here. Day eight, warm & toasty, brought hubs the gift of socks. He has 16 new pairs of socks, so there is no reason for him to steal mine anymore. This is a tradition that I didn't even know that we had until I started to write this post. I always give him socks during his advent calendar. Why? Because he always needs them. This year, we both needed them. That is what happens when your husband steals your socks.

Tradition 2 - Wreath. With warm and toasty toes, he was ready for the next day. Day nine was trimming the door, aka making our annual wreath. We gathered the materials and got sappy while putting it together. With needles everywhere, lots of greens and floral wire, our sappy hands made the best wreath we've ever made. I absolutely adore it! And if you look closely, you'll see Nala saying hello!

Tradition 3 - Gingerbread House. Hubs and I are competitive people. Christmas season isn't excluded from this spirit as our tradition of competing gingerbread houses takes center stage. We always decorate our own side of the house and whoever decorates it the 'best' wins. The prize is nothing more than the self pride of winning. This year, I thought I would switch it up and throw out a variation. Day ten, gingerbread hunt, was an alternative to building. This alternate was a hunt for gingerbread houses in the Arts District (if you live in the area and are interested, research it here). However, hubs wanted to stick to building. Then he threw in his own variation - he wanted to bake rather than buying a kit.

As he said that, I immediately panicked. Little did he know that day eleven was holiday treats meaning we would be baking cookies for the Packer victory (yup, I'm optimistic - and now I know I can tell the future! 13-0 - GO PACK GO!). With that, I clued him in and we decided to combine the two days. We bought some candy to decorate each respective home and got to baking.

As you can see, the icing didn't necessarily want to hold the gingerbread in place. My house of shambles didn't even make it to a photos. What you see here is what is left of hubs masterpiece. I might add, this is a friendly competition between the two of us that we do every year. Since hubs made 'stained glass windows' with sugar and his actually stood much longer then mine, he did win this year. I say by default, but he'd argue he would have won no matter what.

This is all we have left of the gingerbread cookies. They are tasty - we snacked on them throughout the Packer victory on Sunday afternoon.

What are your holiday traditions? Do you ever change them up?

Weekend Advent Recap

Monday, December 6, 2010 -
Over the weekend (including Friday,) hubs celebrated day 3, 4 and 5 of his advent calendar.  Here is a recap of his holiday cheer:

Day 3 - Holiday Fondue
Friday meant an evening at the delicious Melting Pot on the northside.  In the past, hubs and I would frequent often with our two dear friends, the M's, but haven't been in quite a while.  The last time we were there was for my birthday - it was time for some fondue!

This big night out had a French theme, and we took advantage of all the featured courses:
  • Cheese Fondue - consisting of Brie, Fontina, Gruyere and Raclette, the cheese was the best dish.  There was this amazing white-truffle cream that contained Nueske's bacon (go Wisco!) and fresh chives.  The cheese was creamy, but had a hint of the Brie's rind to it once in a while.  However, it was smooth and delicious.
  • Salad - I tried the featured Salade Nicoise and was disappointed with it.  It had many toppings, including a hard-boiled egg, Nicoise olives, tomatoes and beets - but I just wasn't a fan of all the flavors coming together with the vinaigrette. Hubs did comment that his California salad was improving with each visit, slowly getting back to it's original taste as it had been on the decline.
  • Main Course - Fondue Fusion, but this time, we didn't substitute the Goat Cheese & Ratatouille ravioli for something different.  Why?  Because goat cheese was involved!  Though they were the best ravioli we've received at MP, I would encourage you to still swap it out for something else.  The lobster was the usual, as was the Filet Mignon.  The peppercorn crusted NY strip was as expected, very peppery, and the Duck a l'Orange had a bold citrus taste.  The roasted garlic shrimp were sweeter and the Chicken Provencal was fantastic with the sweet & sour sauce, a sauce I normally do not enjoy.
  • Chocolate Course - I was very pleased with the caramelized sugar of the White Chocolate Creme Brulee.  Once you broke through it, the unexpected sweet crunch worked very well with all the dessert dippers.  It really was quite good - a pleasant surprise as we do not normally order white chocolate.

In addition, MP is having a great promotion right now to benefit St. Jude's Children Hospital.  We ended up donating some money and received $20 coupons plus a free dessert fondue that evening.  I encourage you to give back while you enjoy some great food if possible!

Day 4, A Change of Plans
The theme was originally a "Museum Date," but because it was snowing, plans changed.  As I mentioned, hubs can veto a plan if he likes, and the Ahrens' tradition of a the first snowfall breakfast would definitely trump an Advent plan.  Whenever the first overnight snow happens, hubs LOVES to get into the car and drive first thing in the morning.  This year, we hit up Bub's for some snowy breakfast.  I'm a fan of Bub's breakfast, so no complaints here!

Breaking my number one rule of eating out (which is ordering the same thing,) we both ordered a seafood version of Eggs Benedict.  Looking heavy upon receipt (I thought it was white gravy!,) I was pleasantly surprised for a light crab sauce.  A few chunks of some delicious crab (hubs thought it tasted like a seafood sauce, not crab specific) gave great flavor to the dish.  The eggs were over soft rather than poached - I would have preferred the later but was still happy to see egg yolks pour over the toasted English muffin.  Great first snow breakfast!

We spent the remainder of the day running a few errands and prepping for the Movember Gala - which I'll post photos from soon.

Day 5, Cookies
Baking cookies is a tradition!  And rather than waking hubs up early to bake, he ended up nibbling on the goods throughout the afternoon while watching football with the pup.

This year, I ended up baking some Caramel Blondies and Red Velvet Cookies.  I had found the Red Velvet cookie recipe via twitter by following Taste of Home and I was really anxious to try them. Though good, the winner of the cookie battle were the Blondies.  The caramel taste was sweet with the buttery brownie - absolutely delicious both still warm or at room temp.  If you want that recipe, just let me know!  Nom.

How was your weekend?  Were you able to celebrate the holidays?

Meatless Monday - An Easy Pasta

Wednesday, November 10, 2010 -
Many people don't enjoy Mondays.  My hubs happens to be one of those people.  Don't get me wrong, I don't really enjoy Monday's either - I think they are the cousin of the week days that no one really enjoys (yes, I have an analogy for each day of the week.)  But, I try to make the most of it.  This past Monday when I got home from the gym and hubs wasn't in the mood, I rush him out of the kitchen and get cooking.

I'm one of those people that plan a menu around our busy schedule for the week.  I make a grocery list to follow the order of the store.  Yes, I am a planner, I get it.  For me to say, "we'll figure it out" when chatting about a meal is rare, because I usually have some sort of idea.  But alas, it is Monday, and I wanted something simple too (because remember, I'm sleepy too.)  So, I grabbed a box of pasta and decided to "figure it out" by taking a look in the fridge to see what we had remaining from our busy, but fun, weekend.

While I had the pasta water boiling, I roughly chopped up some spinach leftover from the stuffed mushrooms I made for the Halloween party.  We also had a lonely tomato from hub's taco dip for the football game.  We always have at least 3 types of cheese in the fridge so I grabbed some Parmesan and added that to the mix.
Garlic, pepper, salt and olive oil are always home staples, so I add those as well.
Now, none of this took long.  I threw in a batch of chocolate chip cookies for a sweet post meal treat I knew hubs would enjoy.  I know he isn't a huge fan of me making him eat veggie once a week, but he's a good man, so a treat he gets!

Another note - hubs doesn't like whole wheat pasta.  We really enjoy making our own pasta and do so frequently, but sometimes when you want quick and easy (like Monday's,) we end up purchasing it.  We agree on the whole grain pasta - we get the healthy benefits and hubs doesn't have to taste the nutty flavors of the whole wheat that he doesn't like.  Thank you to all the companies who make this because it helps us out!
Once the pasta was drained, I tossed together everything.  The heat of the pasta wilts the spinach just a bit, melts the cheese a little, and brings all those simple ingredients together.  The garlic becomes fragrant and the Parmesan gives off it's own flavorful aroma.  And just like that, an easy (and healthy) dinner.
Hubs even said, "Thanks for making a great dinner I wasn't looking forward to."  Now, I take that as a compliment because hubs just doesn't look forward to meatless Monday's.  But I know with flavorful dishes (like the veggie meals we've had at Tastings or Zing,) he doesn't miss the meat.  And of course, with a sweet surprise treat like cookies, this makes it even better.  He didn't even mention a word that I left them in the oven a tad bit too long (I was cleaning the kitchen - got distracted!)
If you aren't vegetarian (shout out to my friends who are!,) do you try to eat vegetarian meals throughout the week?  What kind of easy meals do you prepare on days that you want something simple?

Cookies, Cupcakes and Sorority Recruitment - Oh My!

Monday, September 13, 2010 -
This past Saturday, I woke up at 8am and started baking.  Why you may ask?  Because I promised I'd bring desserts to the Sigma Kappa women at Ball State University during Sorority recruitment.  As they recruited their hearts out (yay for making quota by the way ladies!) I put together some tasty treats and made the trek to Muncie for the afternoon.  But first, I had to bake.

Now, I'm not a baker.  I don't like measuring and all that jazz.  I adore Holy Cow Cupcakes (so dangerous that they are right down the street from my home) and The Flying Cupcake (thank you for opening another location and providing me with more red velvet.)  I leave the baking business to the professionals.  But alas, once in a while, I whip out those red measuring cups and go to town.  Like this past Saturday when I made 7 dozen cookies and 2 dozen cupcakes in 2.5 hours.  Lovely.

When I was at the store, they were having a sale on Hershey bars, so I thought "Why not make s'more cupcakes?"  And of course, I saw strawberries were also on sale, so the next thought was "and strawberry shortcake cupcakes too!"  For cookies, I like all kinds, so I figured a variety mix would be good.  Thus, double chocolate chunk, peanut butter and sugar cookies were made.

First up - cupcakes.  I made a basic batter out of the good stuff (per Ms. Martha's recommendations of course) and poured half of it into one prepared pan.  The other half, I pureed some strawberries and mix those in before pouring into another pan.  Then, I baked and viola, here they are.  Unfortunately, the strawberry cupcakes did not rise as well as the plain vanilla - see the comparison?
While I let those cool, I baked double chocolate chunk cookies (sorry for the before photo, all I remembered was after!)  They were ooey and gooey, just the way I like them!
Then peanut butter - with the fork pressing of course.  The only difference is I dropped all the cookies rather than rolled - same thing with the sugar...
Sugar cookies.  I thought I had some sanding sugar to top it off with, but I must have finished that up around Valentine's Day and just forgot to restock.  So, they got red sugar crystals instead (it could have been blue, but that would have clashed even more than the red!)
Once all the cupcakes were cooled, I was ready for the fun part - decorating!  These are what makes them look appealing right?  Got together my toppings and prepped the pastry bag.  I cheated and used fluff and strawberry icing...I'm a little bummed I made that call, but I was under a time crunch, so I'll forgive myself.
Strawberry shortcake cupcakes.  I filled and frosted the strawberry vanilla cupcakes with strawberry frosting, though I did a really bad job piping for some reason.  It was extremely light (yes, I know, that is what whipped frosting means) and just wasn't the consistency I needed.  But putting a vanilla wafer and strawberry on top made them look extremely better.
For the first time, I wanted to make s'more cupcakes.  Fluff (which I never heard of until I went to college and found out that is what the East coast kids grew up on - peanut butter and fluff sandwiches...anyone ever heard of jam/jelly before?) is what I decided to fill the cupcakes with and then top them for the sticky marshmallow topping.  Then, I sprinkled some crushed graham crackers on them and added a piece of Hershey chocolate.  Yum.
And there you have it!  Lots of cupcakes and cookies for a job well done!

Of course, I left some in the cookie jar for the hubs.  He would have been awfully sad if he came home and smelled the goodness to find an empty cookie jar.

Did I mention that I somehow got 3 loads of laundry done during this time too?  All before leaving at noon...nice Angie.

Do you ever get in a baking mood - and if so, what do you bake?
