Gifts for the Holiday

Wednesday, December 14, 2011 -
My hubs is a homebrewer. And not just any kind of homebrewer. He is a fantastically gifted homebrewer. What I'm saying is this guy's hobby is the best hobby for him because he is raging good at it. Right now, he has a variety of beers at home for drinking, including Hefe, cider, and two others.

I mean it. This guy is good.

I like to think of him as a beer connoisseur in his own right. And that made day twelve's gift very easy. Themed beer connoisseur, he received a magazine subscription for Beer Connoisseur magazine. I don't know much about beer magazines. He really wants BYOBrew, but this was a great deal from Sweet Jack that I couldn't pass up.

The funny thing about his brewing, it is a perfect bachelor activity. So when I'm traveling for work or have an evening event, he always lines up a new beer to brew. Another thing he loves about his bachelor time is the random food that he eats. Things that I just don't understand. Like Funyons. I mentioned this last year too - he loves his Funyons for a bachelor evening. Day thirteen was easy on a busy night (which ended up not happening, but he still appreciates the crunch). Themed bachelor food, he (and I'm sure the pups helped) unwrapped a bag of Funyon treats that he could enjoy all to himself.

Sometimes it is the simple things.

Fall Harvest Dinner

Tuesday, November 1, 2011 -
When you have friends who can cook, you eat.  That's the rule.  My friends can cook.  Every year, Rachel & Josh host a group of friends to enjoy the tastes of fall.  A quick history lesson - a group of friends get together on an annual basis to celebrate the flavors of fall.  Delicious - my kind of thing for sure.  I happily taste as much as I can while I'm there, and this year was no different.

I wanted to share with you a few photos and comment on some of the delicious food.

Wild Mushroom Risotto - creamy, delicious and oh so perfect.  I had not one, but two servings.  Maybe this is because of my recent risotto kick?  Or maybe it was because it was just plain delicious.  Kudos Unrue brothers!

Pumpkin soup - when I saw the cans and cans of pumpkin puree, I knew Rachel was serving up her pumpkin soup.  Creamy, bursting with pumpkin flavor.  And bleu cheese crumbles and bacon don't hurt either.

Sweet potatoes - I can't tell you how much I love these.  I was first introduced to this specific recipe a few years ago and ate loads of it.  I did so again this time around.  Thank you Rachel!

Pork wrapped in pork - you heard me right, pork loin wrapped in pork.  I haven't crunched on pork belly like this before.  It caramelized so well when it was cooked, that a knife and fork weren't going to cut it, literally.  And my dear friends, that is not a complaint by any means.  The pork was a little more than medium and extremely tender.  Seasoned to perfection, this was a pig I would eat over and over again.  My friend Steven, you are nothing less than extremely gifted when it comes to pig!

And to top it all off, hubs supplied some quality ESB and premium bitter beer for the event.  It was a different batch from our BrewMile, but same type.  Delicious for sure - I'm married to one talented man that is for sure!

Another great Harvest Dinner.  My stomach was full and my heart content - good friends, great food and happiness of the season!  Thanks dear ones!

Heaven & Hell - Our Halloween Party

Monday, October 31, 2011 -
Hubs and I had a great time entertaining friends this past weekend by hosting our annual Halloween party.  This year's theme, as you may remember, was Heaven & Hell.

The hosts for the evening!
Our second floor (living room, kitchen, and dining room) was Heaven.  Complete with candle light, cloud seating, and heavenly treats.  Champagne punch had people sipping sparkles while holy water kept others in high spirits.

You may recognize the nun?  Of course, she is my mother!  Yup, mom and dad came and surprised us with two of their good friend, Pete & Debbi.  When I say surprised us, that means they drove from Wisconsin for the evening!  Thanks for coming mom and dad!  You definitely surprised us!

Our first floor and garage was hell for the evening.  Spicy treats included jalapeno poppers, buffalo dip, spicy shrimp and other hot candies.  In addition, hubs home brewed pumpkin ale and my hard cider were flowing.  I have to post photos of hubs pumpkin tap later - it is a treat you won't want to miss!

We have some great friends who came out.  Sad to see others didn't make it, but a good time was surely had by all those who did!

Happy Halloween!

A Weekend of Modifications & Cooking

Tuesday, December 21, 2010 -
::sniffle::

Yup, I've been fighting a cold since Saturday.  'Tis the season I guess.  And though it isn't a horrible cold (despite that I sound like a frog and my head is pounding), it still doesn't make me want to do much despite the pending holiday.  So our advent fun has been slightly derailed...but alas, we still try!

Day 17: Happy Chrisma-Hanukwan-Zakah Celebration: Every holiday, hubs and I host our annual holiday gathering for our close friends.  Uber casual affair: claymation (specifically Rudolph, hubs fave) and other holiday movies are shown while people mix and mingle with drinks & nosh.  Featured this year was hubs home brew of Nut Brown and Hefe - both delicious - and mix of food, including jalapeno popper dip, mini crab quiches, fruit salsa and gorgonzola & pear pizza's drizzled with a honey balsamic sauce.  It was a wonderful, laid back evening - thanks to those who joined us!

Day 18: A Stately Affair: We modified this day, as we were going to visit the Indiana State Museum to see both the Titanic Exhibition and 'Odd Indiana.'  Plus, Celebration Crossing is always cute if you want to get in the holiday spirit.  They even have this little train you can ride, it's adorable.  Unfortunately, neither one of us were quite in the mood to go and ended up catching up on some DVR'd tele and holiday shopping.  But I'm not complaining!  We even decided to have a home fondue evening.  We only made it through the cheese course (a basic swiss with adobo chili and bacon) as we were too full for our pending chocolate.  Maybe we'll get to it later in the week, and if not, we'll just have lots of fruit to eat up!

Day 19: A House of Ginger: This is another modification, because we didn't build our Gingerbread house as intended.  I guess the weekend of no plans was in full force!  Instead, we finished holiday shopping and made lots of yummy food throughout the day, including bleu cheese meatballs in this rich and creamy bleu cheese sauce (note - sounds like a lot of bleu, but in reality, it wasn't at all.  Fantastic with some good bread too, which we had), sausage and cheddar biscuits and bacon wrapped jalapenos (of course I had to use up the leftovers from the dip!)  This was all after a yummy breakfast of pumpkin spiced waffles (subtly, cause we spread some blueberry sauce on top still) and thickly sliced bacon.  Lazy Sunday, my favorite.

Day 20: Holiday Exchange: Our own private holiday gift giving, hubs and I have decided to exchange a few small items because we are going to get something 'big' after the holiday.  By big, we mean probably another pup.  We plan on rescuing one from Tri-State Rescue, so we are waiting for the right one to come along as well as the right time.  Nala does need a playmate, so we'll see...but back to the evening.  I must have been a good girl this year, because I got lots of Disney love, especially Nightmare Before Christmas.  I heart Disney's Vinylmation, so that was a fun treat. And the ornament exchange is tradition, as is the Disney Precious Moment (hubs gets me one every year since we've been married because we had one on our cake table.)  I gave hubs his ornament, some basic beer mugs for the sharing of home brews (time to pack up some of those pint glasses!) and his last gift hasn't arrived yet.  He really wanted the 1 liter beer mug, similar to the Hofbrauhaus glass.  What my baby wants, my baby gets - it should arrive a few days after the holiday.

The final week of the advent calendar is here - looking forward to some great food (my taste buds better start working as should my nose...) with friends and holidays with the family!  And of course, happy Winter Solstice!

Gift giving - anything you excited for if you are giving or receiving?

Thanksgiving Menu...nom nom nom...

Wednesday, November 24, 2010 -
courtesy of The Washington Post
Turkey Day is just about here and I'm excited.  A day full of food, football, Macy's Day Parade, family and friends.  This year, we are lucky to be celebrating it with friends and family - hub's sister and our brother-in-law are driving to Indy with our beautiful nephew and our dear friends MC & RS are joining us.

Last week, I completed the menu for a day of feasting.  I'm really excited to try new dishes this year as I stray from the norm by tweaking here and there.  Here is the game plan:

Brunch
  • Pumpkin Doughnut Muffins (which were made on Sunday)
  • Mushroom, Bacon & Swiss Strata (will assemble tonight)
  • Fruit
  • Mimosa's, coffee and juice
Highlight of brunch - the pumpkin muffins.  Oh gosh, I can't wait to eat more than my fair share...all while watching the Macy's Day Parade.  Just love it.  Love.

Appetizers
Then we'll have some appetizers during football time - nothing too extravagant.  I wasn't able to find figs so that put a kink in my original plans, but I swapped it out for some baked brie.  Here is the what we have planned for munchies (but let us be honest, I'm sure some chips or something will be thrown into the mix):
  • Raspberry Baked Brie
  • Walnut, caramelized onion and bleu cheese dip
  • Crudites

Among the football, board games, and child laughter (I hope!) dinner preparation will be happening.  Hubs and I really planned ahead this year so that we barely spend anytime in the kitchen for the big day.  I assembled as much as I could prior to our guests arrival and I'm sure it will pay off.

Dinner
  • Pumpkin & Squash Soup (making tonight)
  • Roasted Beet Salad with Goat Cheese
  • Turkey (hubs is in charge - rotisserie style)
  • Apple Chestnut Dressing ( roasted and peeled the chestnuts last night, but assembling tonight - also using this as a base, but am tweaking for my own love)
  • Garlic Mashed Potatoes (hubs in charge)
  • Green Bean Casserole (thank you Martha!)
  • Corn Casserole (MC is bringing - yum!)
  • Cranberries (MC again)
  • Mac & Cheese (MC one more time - gluten free!)
  • Herb Buttermilk Biscuits (made these on Sunday, they are ready to be baked!)
  • Pumpkin Pie (making tomorrow morning)
  • Pecan Pie with Bourbon Cream (tomorrow morning too!)
Hubs has made some hefeweizen (nom nom nom, love hefe, especially this one if you remember) for the festivities too, so I'm excited for the batch of home brew. It is his first hefe round - I'm excited!  We are also stopping at Sun King Brewing so we can fill the kegerator - type of brew tbd.  Wine will be flowing as well.

Game plan tomorrow is to bake the pies in the morning and bake sides (dressing, beans and biscuits) in the afternoon.  I'll rewarm the soup, and that is all.  Not a lot of work on the day of - it is amazing what a little planning can do!

Am I excited?  Absolutely! I can't wait for this day of eating and relaxing.  Very thankful for lots of things in life, so why not celebrate it!?

What are your plans for Turkey Day?  Anything that you absolutely can't wait to eat?!
